Mawar Marzuki: Selected poems

THE TORN PROLOGUE

~the night mom left me to meet the creator~

one night in 2010, the prologue was snapped

and torn-off from the enchanting novel i was reading.

stuck at the middle of the story: startled , lost in

the journey i was about to quest.

it was a ride vicariously meant to end.

suddenly, millions of alphabets left with the

torn prologue as i saw the storyline flying to the skies

plot by plot, like a train of birds soaring into the horizon

the pages left for the touch at my fingers were

void of words, bold but blank and barren

in the pages drops and drops of emptiness

started drawing vacuums

until my fingers flicked the final leaf

which is just another lost plot

tell me

how does a story end

without a prologue?

THE GREEN BUTTERFLY

The green notes were folded

into fancy fans

suspended beautifully

into a butterfly

flimsily turned into a blanket

covering his longings

Whooping coughs sneak into the labyrinth of dreams

“these I bring to you cherubic soul”

Rheumatic fingers and naïve palms

Green notes changing hands

“5 ringgit for a salam dear”

Paying homage getting longer

And a small girl lost her way to school

note

Ringgit: Malaysian currency

5 ringgit note is green in colour

THE LOST CORNER

the unicorn and me in the tumult fantasy racing through that route the blinding light swathing the sight and i missed it again the lost corner where reality sequestered in the damsel’s shed
